Katie Currie
Katie Currie is an American-born improviser, comedian and zoologist whose work spans theatre, sketch and long-form improv, with the occasional detour into the study of animals — a discipline she insists is unrelated, but which continues to influence her observational comedy.
She began performing in 2013 with her university improv team, None of the Above, before joining the sketch collective Secret Recipe, an alternative comedy night at the University of Colorado. While completing a degree in Creative Writing, Katie also taught improvisation to new students through the Umbrella Improv Initiative, quickly establishing herself as both a performer and facilitator.
After briefly attempting to live the “adult life” in Boulder, Colorado, that experiment ended when a fellow comedian invited her to move across the world to Australia — a decision that has proven significantly more successful.
In Melbourne, Katie joined The Improv Conspiracy in 2019, performing regularly on Harold Night house teams and multiple indie ensembles including Fry Kids and Hedge Lords. She later joined The Big HOO-HAA! Melbourne in 2021, where she continues to perform weekly as part of the ensemble cast.
Katie is also a member of the leadership committee of The Big HOO-HAA!, contributing to the company’s creative direction, performer development and ongoing evolution of the show.
She has performed extensively across the Australian comedy festival circuit, including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and Perth Fringe World, appearing in acclaimed shows such as Cool Show Sixty-Nine, The Nightlight Zone and Get in the Boot.
Katie is known for her sharp character work, intelligent comedic instincts and quick, collaborative performance style. When not performing or teaching, she can often be found writing, developing new work, or observing the natural world with the same level of focus she brings to the stage.
