What is improv comedy? (and why it is so addictive)

If you’ve ever wondered what improv comedy actually is — you’re not alone.
For our first blog post we though it might be a good idea to talk about what we love most (other than our audience of course). Improv comedy is a form of live theatre where everything is made up on the spot. No scripts. No planning. Just performers responding in real time to audience suggestions, each other, and whatever chaos unfolds on stage.
At its core, improv is about listening, reacting, and building something funny and unexpected together — usually with very little idea where it’s going.
So why do people love it?
Every show is unique and that makes it special.
Unlike traditional comedy, improv has no safety net. Anything can happen — and often does. One suggestion from the audience can turn into a musical number, a glorious quest, or a complete disaster (the funny kind).
That unpredictability is what makes it so addictive — both to watch and perform.
Is improv comedy actually good?
When it’s done well, yes — incredibly. And the Big HOO-HAA! Melbourne are up there with the best.
Our performers create fast-paced, high-energy comedy scenes inspired entirely by audience ideas. It’s spontaneous, competitive, and completely unpredictable.
Where can I see improv comedy in Melbourne?
You can experience live improv comedy every week at The Big HOO-HAA! at the Motley Bauhaus in Carlton — one of Melbourne’s longest-running weekly comedy shows.
